Stacking Features

Hi all, I'm aware that it is possible to have more complex features by  stacking them. However, I haven't really put much thought into it until now. Apologies if this is a silly question, but how would I go about doing that? How does it work? I've seen it before in a video or two, but didn't entirely understand how it works.
