basalt_columns alternatives?

I'm trying to make a custom basalt delta variant for a datapack (modded 1.20.1) and I need a feature similar to the basalt_columns but with different blocks. I also need to make sure I'm not going to cause much lag on generation. would It be best to use something like the vegetation patch for recreating this feature or would something else be more suitable?
