Can I change an item's damage?

So I have added a max_damage and a damage component to my item and I wanna be able to change it with commands but it has resisted almost all and any attempts I had.
/data doesnt allow to modify player data ( even if its their items )
/replace item should know the current durability of the item.
And I'm kinda stunned.
