can I make a sword that temporarily turns everything around the player to gravel?

The description kinda says it, on hypixel I had a paintball gun in the lobby that threw snowballs which temporarily changed blocks in the lobby to colored terracotta, can I do smth like that to a sword but apply it to blocks in a radius around the player using the sword?
