How bad is tick?

I have made a datapack that runs a couple commands on each tick, which are just checking if a tag exists and also there are 2 trigger commands which also run each tick to see if they have been run. The server I have them running on is having some real bad lag problems and I am wondering if these are possibly causing some major issues. We have 8gb of ram and normally a server of this size shouldn't be struggling. There are definitely some other things it could be I just am more curious for a general overview how bad running things on tick is? Thanks in advance!
