Use a variable/constant in selectors?

Is there a way to have a variable/constant be used in selectors? I have few places that basically do @e[distance=..32] and it would be nice to make them easier to change. Didnt dabble much with scoreboards, but maybe you can somehow use them for storing/retrieving, I dont see how rn, but maybe?
