Datapack on Github

Hi guys! I'd like to make my datapack open source and make it possible to people to contribute.
I know that's not going to happen, but I want to set up the github repository anyway for people to be able to do it.
My question is: how should I handle the support resource pack thing?
Should I make it as a separate repository or is there a way for my git repository to be split into two without losing or messing with the "git files"?
