Need help understanding recipe unlocks

The image is the recipe for a vanilla golden sword. What I don't get is that one of the criteria to unlock the golden sword recipe is to own the recipe itself. If I don't have it, how is it unlocked? If I have it, why am I rewarded with it again? This syntax is confusing.
