Cannot figure out very basic fill function

I'm completely new to datapacks and I want to do this simple singleplayer user command "/fill ~ ~ ~ ~5 255 ~5 stone" through a test datapack function. It doesn't work as the command on its own so can I fill around a certain coordinate/player?
