Remote Inventory

im not sure how doable it is but is there a way to open a inventory unique to a player or item, or adleast achieve a similar affect
i want to be able to store pieces of paper in a book's inventory for a mana system im making 
i know i could probably just setblock barrel whilst i hold an item and store inventory or something but i dont like the idea of a block being placed for it to work
