Sweeping Weapons

How can I add a sweep attack to weapons? Basically, I want to make a sort of Scythe that can hit multiple players at the same time like a sword can with multiple mobs, or atleast do a sort of area damage. (I also don't know if the sweep attack on the sword works by hitting multiple players, if it does, how can I take it off?)
