How do you diagnose item packs?

I'm going a little crazy trying to make simple recipes, I can't figure out why they aren't working. They'll work for a little then I change some things and they stop working (either the knowledge books stop getting converted to the right item, or the recipes just stop showing up all together).
How do you debug them? Is there way to see errors?
