Using custom items in recipe (Custom Model Data)

I am unsure how to add an item with custom model data into a recipe for another item. I can create a recipe that generates a custom item with ease, but I am unsure how exactly to write the code to make sure it is accepting a custom item (ex. the recipe will not accept wheat, but it will accept 'wheat' with custom model data that makes it appear as a pie shell).
