Modifying the item the player is holding

Hi, I have a weapon that changes its tags after the player claims it I am wanting to put the item in the players hand into a chest and then modifying the item there then returning it to the player. 
But, when I try to put the "SelectedItem" into the chest it doesn't work. but I can bring in the "Inventory" into the chest. What should I do?
